Torrey Pines Torrey Pines is named for the distinctive pines that grow only in this area. Their wind-blown shapes dot the cliffs above the scenic beaches that characterize the coast here just south of Much of the area is protected because of environmental concerns and wildlife. There are lagoons, wetlands, sandstone bluffs and canyons that provide hiking trails and bird watching. The beach area is wide and suitable for both children and swimmers.
